United Democratic Party Promises Change and Hope

The speech of former US President Bill Clinton supporting Obama as his choice and promising replacing of an era of ´division and fear´ with return of ´unity and hope´ energized the atmosphere on 3rd night of Democratic Party convention as party unity continues to grow stronger and stronger.

Bill Clinton´s speech resonating Senator Hillary Clinton´s unequivocal support for Obama ended the speculations of continuing divide between Hillary and Obama from the days of primaries. Independent observers including one of the CNN reporters in Denver opined that Bill Clinton´s speech has not only turned skeptics into believers but also energized the Democrats. The mood and zest during Bill´s speech left no doubt in viewers mind in America and rest of the world that whole convention process has worked into a unified Democratic Party. The Clinton´s support for Obama and party supported by their 18 million voters is the edge that Republicans presidential nominee John McCain can ever achieve in national election. Whatever.

Joe Biden´s message of tax reform code promising to provide relief to 95 percent middle class Americans was a solid concrete commitment. Biden´s concrete pledge to keep ´people first´ was in continuation of Democratic Party´s commitment to welfare of average ´Joneses´. Biden´s pledge is first drop of rain because in all probability Obama following the footsteps of his VP will come up with more concrete proposals to provide relief to average American in his acceptance speech on the final night of the convention. It is opined that Obama´s speech will promise relief for America including 100 million middle class voters relying on paychecks that McCain´s tax break plans ignore.

McCain following the footsteps of Bush intends to continue with federal budget deficit by allowing rich tax breaks. Democrats on the other hand promise to balance the federal budget just like Bush received surplus budget from Bill Clinton when he stepped into office in 2000. McCain tax breaks for rich will continue Bush´s legacy of budget deficits. Bush despite promises has failed to recoup budget deficits year after year. McCain fiscal policy will bring no different results in this area.

McCain campaign making national security into an election issue is a cover up for its failure to change Bush´s pro-rich tax break policies, pro-oil and corporate America policies and continuation of Bush foreign policy agenda even after his departure. The Democrats and majority of Americans have aptly dubbed McCain= Bush.

Bill Clinton has busted the Republican myth of youth vs. experience argument in case of Obama and McCain. Bill reminded America that in 1992 same observations were raised against his campaign but history shows that Bill not only lead America successfully but it remained safe during his two terms in office and the country enjoyed good working relations and with rest of the world. Bush has not only undermined all Clinton era strengths but has also undermined American image in rest of the world. McCain promising to continue Iraq occupation and maintaining US troop presence in Afghanistan is upholding failed Bush policies and continue with flawed US foreign policies based on use of force instead of dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation.

The classic performance by Bill Clinton and concrete promises of Joe Biden has prepared a perfect atmosphere for Obama´s acceptance speech on the final day of the Convention. It is therefore hoped that Obama will do following things to solidify Democratic Party win in the ´08 presidential election in November. In terms of domestic policies Obama like Senior George Bush should ask America to ´Read my lips´ when he talks of welfare of Average American. He should talk of increasing average hourly wage, salaries, reducing fuel prices, cutting inflation, use of tax dollars for Main Street in social welfare, education, health care and tax breaks. He should tell the Republicans to take care of themselves because in the past eight years they have followed policies that made them rich and left rest of America struggling to make ends meet. Obama should include all these issues in his acceptance speech so that Republicans understand the meaning of word substance and difference between rhetoric and reality.

In terms of US foreign policy Obama by reiterating his commitment to withdraw forces from Iraq and ending US engagements in other parts of the world including wars in Afghanistan can help America regain its lost image and improve its relations with rest of the world. The global community is listening to Obama. It all depends if he is ready to promise that America will respect rest of the world as equals not slaves who should march on its order or face fury of a bully have strong military power. Similarly, Obama by promising to stop American meddling overseas and respecting democratic verdict of people in choosing their governments can make the world a lot safer place with lot of goodwill for US.

The moving of the convention to open following footsteps of J.F. Kennedy has historical significance. Obama acceptance speech coinciding with the anniversary of Martin Luther King´s speech ´l have a dream…´ shows that he wanted to make history. It is about time Obama restores the true self of America that Robert Frost, the once country´s national poet envisaged for its people and rest of the world. A country that respected ´wall of its neighbors´ and a country that was made for average people who were not only free to dream and hope but could actually realize their dreams and hopes.

America wants change. It aspires for hope and dignity. Will Obama make history by promising to stand up for average American against the rich and corporate America or will he use the final night of 2008 Democratic Party Convention to climb should be clear in his speech. Only time will tell. For now his that he used on Convention floor promise hope for an average American when he said,I care for people and I will fight for them in the White House. It is hoped that Obama will stand for average American to restore their dignity and hope which Republicans undermined and disregarded during their eight-year dictatorial rule. Similarly the rest of the world like 81 percent Americans would like to see Obama promise ending two wars and unconditional US troop withdrawal to help restore peace in the world.

Finally, much to the disappointment of Republicans including two from twin cities, Clintons, Biden, Dean, Pelosi and party members have presented Obama a united Democratic Party on the final day of the Party Convention. Obama´s time has come. History is in the making. It therefore time for Obama to stand up and brace the challenge to provide relief to average America which is held hostage by the corporate and rich Republican America so that coming generations and rest of the world too can have faith in Hope and Change.
