Easter Bunny Booted From St. Paul City Hall
If a company observes Easter, but not Halloween, a high holy days for pagans, that's blatant discrimination.
Thank goodness that in larger cities common sense prevails and Easter is not a civic or public celebration, but a private and religious observance.
The Easter Bunny has been banished from the St. Paul City Hall. The city's human right director, Tyrone Terrill wisely ordered that a toy rabbit, plastic eggs and the words "Happy Easter" be removed from the lobby of the City Council offices.
Some might think that this is a case of political correctness run amok, but religious symbols have no place in a City Hall.
Citizens of St. Paul who enter city hall to conduct business shouldn't be assaulted with religious imagery. A Muslim, Jew or an agnostic who has business with the city, might feel he won't get a fair deal if he sees a Christian symbol as soon as he enters the City Hall lobby.
A cute little toy bunny might seen innocuous, but it might be offensive to someone who is agnostic, atheist, or a follower of a religion other than Christianity.
Kudos to Mr. Terrill, he is doing the right thing. The "Happy Easter" sign should be replaced with a more positive and inclusive sign. I'm sure that a sign wishing everyone a "Happy Spring" would be non-controversial and make everyone smile.
