In A Word - Liberal

Gerald Eisman
Liberal: Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others. Broad-minded.

The very word strikes fear in the hearts of conservative thinkers who have cornered the market on stultified thought and action. It has become anathema in conservative vocabulary. It is the antithesis of the conservative direction. It has been relegated to the class of four-letter words that denote the basest, vilest of terms. It is a witch or warlock conjured up with all the other demons from Salem. Yet what does that "vilest of all terms" really stand for? Let's examine the word and its synonyms to see for ourselves. All conservatives interested in finding out what the other side thinks are invited along.

A person with liberal political opinions is a progressive, left-wing reformer and a freethinking latitudinarian. He is a person who believes everyone should be gifted with the availability of a safety net should they stumble or fall in this richest of all nations. He believes that war, not homosexuality is the real abomination to be shunned. He believes the Constitution of the United Stated is a document written for the betterment of every citizen of this nation, whether native born or naturalized.

To be liberal means to think thoughts independent of anyone else's, and not be swayed by screaming and intimidation, sour facial expressions or vocal castigation. Liberals examine evidence before acting and, if there is concern about the facts presented, seek further, and conclusive evidence. A liberal thinker will seek and consider all opinions before making up his/her mind rather than form an opinion, set it in stone then try to argue down contrary views.

To be liberal means to be free of bigotry and the fear of the known that is opposite to another's thoughts. Liberals do not fear homosexuality or the union of two people of the same sex. To the liberal thinker, two people that care enough for each other that they are willing to "cleave each to the other" for life ought to have the right to do so. There is no fear that such behavior will taint the population, nor that such behavior will bring the wrath of God upon our heads. The only fear the liberals have about the situation is that some group will try to tinker with the constitution and steal another freedom from the people of this country.

To be a liberal is to understand that the creation of jobs by a new government begins at the point where an administration takes command and increases from there. The number of jobs currently is not that much more than when the current gang inside the loop took command more than 5 years ago. Creation begins when the number of positions in existence meets the number that existed on January of 2000. Then, and only then, would the thinking liberal agree that job origination had begun.

The liberal does not adhere to dogma or authoritarian rule. He or she believes in the rule of law as spelled out in the constitution and interpreted by the judicial system. A liberal believes in the bill of rights and expects that those freedoms should never be rescinded, altered or ignored, nor attempts be made to amend the constitution to relieve even one citizen of the rights granted by it. Still, a liberal will fight to improve the lot of the nation's less fortunate through the power of that document.

The liberal believes in equal opportunity for every citizen and a fair and equitable system of taxation that does not favor one group of people over another. The opportunity to grow is there for everyone in the liberal mind and the obligation to support the nation belongs to each individual and business without regard to connections or status. To the liberal, fair share means exactly that.

A liberal person is noted for tolerance. The open door policy of allowing the oppressed to immigrate is not something to fear in the mind of the liberal. By using the proper and intelligent investigation, undesirables can be prevented from crossing our borders, while the majority of those seeking entry can be allowed to do so. Liberals remember that every person in the United States, except for the Native Americans, is either an immigrant or a descendant of one. Immigrants founded and developed America and made it the great nation it is today. Can we now shut our doors to them and show disdain without bringing shame down on us as well?

I've hear it said that being a liberal is a curse and displays a total lack of care for the country. I've heard the rhetoric that brands anyone who disagrees with those in power and disputes their actions or tries to remove them from office are traitors. So be it then, but thank God they are out there. Someone has to stem the bleeding out of our freedoms and stop the national plunge into madness before there's no country to save.
