Andrew Jackson $1 coins to debut at The Hermitage
Andrew Jackson was the seventh President of the United States, and he will be honored with the seventh and newest Presidential $1 coin that will begin circulating on Thursday, August 14, 2008.
The United States Mint will launch the new coins in a ceremonial event at The Hermitage, President Jackson's home near Nashville, Tennessee.
United States Mint Deputy Director Andrew Brunhart and past regent of The Hermitage board of directors Richard Cowart will lead a ceremonial "pour" of thousands of Andrew Jackson Presidential $1 Coins on the front lawn of the mansion.
Past ceremonial coin releases have been momentous for children, and this one will be no different. Each child under 18 years old will receive a free Andrew Jackson $1 coin. Others wishing to obtain one or more of the pristine coins can exchange for them with dollar bills.
Andrew Jackson was a man who accomplished many firsts during his lifetime. He was the first Tennessean to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was also the first person to serve as a US Representative, Senator, and President. Perhaps most notable, unlike all Presidents before and after him, Jackson left office with zero national debt.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony that begins 10 a.m. CT. The Hermitage, which opened as a museum in 1889, is located at:
4580 Rachel’s Lane
Nashville, Tennessee 37076
(615) 889-2941
In 2007 alone, the United States Mint produced nearly 1 billion Presidential $1 coins. Production amounts have gone down with each succeeding $1 coin, but more than 50 million Jackson coins are likely to be minted.
Still, finding dollar coins in circulation can sometimes be difficult. A more direct method is purchasing bags and rolls of Presidential $1 coins directly from the U.S. Mint website. Andrew Jackson dollars will be available there beginning August 14.
