RUN FOR OROMIA 5K and 10K OFFERS

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Run for Oromia is offering one of the largest prize purses in Minnesota next to the Twin Cities and Grandma's Marathons. The race will be held on Saturday August 2, 2008 at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis. The 10K Race will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the 5K Race will begin at 9:15 a.m.

The Oliqaa Foundation is proud to sponsor the first, Run for Oromia Tournament. The Run for Oromia aspires to educate the world at large about the trials and tribulations of Oromo people and hopes to bring recognition to Oromo athletes' contribution in the world of athletics. Many Oromian athletes have become world renowned for their achievements in running, including Abebe Bikila (1974 Olympic Gold Medalist in the Marathon), Darartu Tullu (1994 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 10,000 meter race), and Fatuma Roba (1994 Olympic Gold Medalist in the Marathon). Several veteran Oromo athletes will be present at the race on August 2.



Oromo people are one of the largest ethno national groups in the Horn of Africa and make up a significant portion of the population in Ethiopia, about 40 million. Minnesota is chosen to host the first, Race for Oromia because of the large presence of Oromo immigrants in the state. Minnesota, often referred to by Oromo people as little Oromia, hosts an estimated 15,000 Oromo immigrants.

Early registration, before July 30, costs $25. After midnight on July 30th, the registration fee will be $30. Mail in registrations postmarked no later the July 26th. Online registration is available until July 30 at midnight at www.andersonraces.com.
