Oath of the First Vice President of Nepal in "Hindi" was in All Anti-Patriotic

Prakash Bom
An elected vice president is accountable as an individual citizen of Nepal to the entire nation because Paramananda Jha was not solely elected by the votes of his political party, which has nominated him as one of the candidates of Nepal´s first vice-president. Therefore, his choice of language for VP´s oath in "Hindi" despite his own ethnic language ´Maithali´ has perverted him from his ethical responsibility as both an ethnic Maithali and individual citizen of Nepal. In all, his oath in "Hindi" was not acceptable because his disloyalty to the nation and people of Nepal of all ethnicities is intolerable.

As per VP Paramananda Jha´s defense statement even after he has been successfully elected as VP of Nepal he has been loyal to his political party more than to the entire nation and people of Nepal because one of the main agenda of his party MPRF (Madhesi People´s Rights Forum) as per his statement is to establish Hindi as Madhesi language of Nepal. If that is true than such an agenda of MPRF violates the linguistic rights of Teraian ethnic groups – Maithali, Bhojpuri, and Avadhi.

It is very important to understand socio-politically about the contemporary "Hindi" language of India. When "Hindi" language was purposed as the national medium of language of India after independence it was opposed itself in India because "Hindi" wasn´t spoken in most of the states of India. Basically, "Hindi" has long ago wiped out all the ethnic languages of northern states of India such as Maithali, Bhojpuri and Avadhi. These three ethnic languages are still dominantly spoken among the Teraians Maithali, Bhojpuri and Avadhi communities of Nepal.

Due to Bollywood Hindi entertainment industries the popularity of "Hindi" skyrocketed in India more in substance than in style for people to speak "Hindi" particularly among ethnic linguistic communities such as Bhojpuri. As a result, the ethnic languages of northern states of India have been extinct in the vacuum of "Hindi". However, these ethnic languages have still been surviving in Teraian ethnic communities of Nepal. But unfortunately they are about to get wiped out with the misleading political agenda of MPRF that is vested with the interest for expanding India´s "Hindi" language in Nepal.

It has become obvious that the demand of "one-Madhes-one-province" can be achieved if "Hindi" as the language of Madhes and Madhesis is established. MPRF is playing deceitful subtle political games in an attempt to make "Hindi" Terai Madhes language, which will result in wiping out linguistic rights of ethnic and indigenous Teraians – Maithali, Bhojpuri, Avadhi, Tharus, and Rajbanshi.

MPRF as powerful Indian agent, particularly of the political, economic and linguistic interests of the northern Indian states, has not only become a solid political threat to the integrity of Nepali nation and its medium of national language but also it has become peril to the linguistics of Teraian ethnic and indigenous communities.

MPRF has misled Teraians with the politically incorrect "Hindi" term "Madhes and Madhesi" with the vested interest of its certain leaderships who are the paid agents of political power of northern Indian states – UP and Bihar. If not, how could they mobilize their movement without such cashing of political influence! Therefore, VP Paramananda Jha´s attempt to clarify his oath in "Hindi" in respect to the aspiration of people of Terai for their participations in MPRF´s political movement is again misleading. Teraians must defend their ethnic linguistic right from being wiped out by the homogeneity of "Hindi" language.

The uniqueness of Teraians cannot be preserved without their ethnic linguistic rights as distinct from the Bollywood Hindi language that is superficial in culture and substance. It is time for Teraians to defend their ethnic linguistic and cultural rights that cannot be encapsulated in the agenda of MPRF with "one-Madhes one province" of "Hindi" language, which cannot be one of the media of language of Federal Democratic Republic Nepal that can jeopardize ethnic languages of Teraians who are misrepresented by politically illegitimate "Hindi" term "Madhes and Madhesi".

It is politically true that the world of political propaganda can mislead the crowd of innocent people with the false hope for change that can wipe out their own existence, which only history can tell for new generation to discover the truth. But it is the responsibility of all other political leaderships to smell the rate in the agenda of a political party, which elected first vice president, has violated the constitutional right of the Nepali nation to administer the state oath in its national medium of language.

Nepal as a diverse multi-lingual, multi culture and multi-ethnic nation with the mandate of April Uprising can administer state oath in all other endogenous and ethnic languages of Nepal such as Magar, Kirat, Tharu, Rajbanshi, Maithali, Bhojpuri, Avadhi, but it cannot administer in "Hindi" as national language of India, which violates the constitutional right of a sovereign nation.

Therefore, it is time for the main political party leaderships to speak out in protest of VP Paramananda Jha´s oath in "Hindi" that has violated the constitutional right of Nepali nation. In protest they must immediately dislodge their alliance with MPRF, if in earnest it is one of the agenda of MPRF for establishing "Hindi" language as one of the national media of languages of Nepal. For example, if political leaders such as UML´s KP Oli and NC´s SB Deupa speak in favor of alliance with MPRF with their vested personal political interest for power then they must not be spared from the blame of anti-patriotic.

In my opinion, the nation must move to the right direction in order to keep the national integrity intact in every level – speech, action and thought, while establishing federal democratic republic political system. As a matter of fact, VP Paramananda Jha´s oath in "Hindi" was the threat to such processes because his thoughtless unpatriotic act of oath has violated the constitutional right of Nepali nation. Could he have been spared if he had taken oath in Maithali? Of course, that is his ethnic linguistic right. It was, definitely, of his and his party´s wishful disrespect to Nepali nation of its entire diverse ethnicity.

It is, therefore, only the impeachment of such an intransigent can save the nation in attempt to establishing a new democratic Nepal regarding the national integrity. In the evolution of democracy of Nepal even if people of Nepal have to protest from the street to the Constituent Assembly such an intransigent must be impeached. The national dignity will not heal just re-administering his oath again.
