Sandy Powers is Living Proof That All Foods Are Not Created Equally
"Organic for Health" will convince you to avoid conventionally grown foods laden with the biggest offenders, and more importantly, to fill your body with the clean, potent vitamins and minerals in organic foods that truly honor your health.
We interviewed Sandy to find out more about her new book in the hopes that it will open up everyone´s eyes to the fact that not all foods are created equally.
Thank you for this interview, Sandy . When were you diagnosed with liver disease?
I´m delighted to be here. In the summer of 2005, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and liver disease. The location of the breast tumor made a mastectomy my best option. Unfortunately, the liver disease prevented me from undergoing any further cancer treatment. I knew I had to find an alternative treatment to heal my liver and fight cancer recurrence.
At what point did you decide that changing your diet would help with the liver disease? Are you cancer-free because of it?
When I knew I had to find an alternative treatment, I went into research mode. Every day for a year I did extensive research. I read hundreds of medical journals, I poured through hundreds of medical studies, and I read dozens of books on nutrition, intensive farming, and soil depletion. The evidence was overwhelming to me. I switched to organic foods, used olive oil for all my cooking and baking, and discontinued all multiple vitamin and mineral supplements. My liver healed. I remain on this healing plan to fight cancer recurrence.
What did the doctors tell you? Were they behind you or were they skeptical?
I told my doctors that I was taking six months to try out my plan and then I would return for tests. My internist was skeptical. My oncologist was encouraging.
From the time you were diagnosed to the time you were cancer-free, how much time lapsed?
Breast cancer patients don´t really think cancer-free. There is no cure for breast cancer. I prefer to think of dormant, never to return. Eighteen months passed until we felt comfortable. I will be entering my fourth year of no detectable cancer and my liver remains healed.
Do you feel that if you had not chosen an alternative method of treatment, that you would not have been given a clean bill of health?
I am absolutely convinced that if I had not made the changes that I had, my liver very well could have reached the point of no return and my cancer could have taken another path. My oncologist believes, along with many other oncologists, that our food will play an enormous role in the future of medicine, especially in cancer and in liver diseases.
Can you give us an example of foods that are supposedly healthy, but are not?
Most of the food sold in grocery stores is conventionally grown or produced food, meaning they are grown with toxic pesticides, toxic fertilizers, herbicides, added hormones and antibiotics. Organic food, by law, cannot contain these additives. Conventionally grown sweet bell peppers, celery, lettuce, and potatoes are the among the most contaminated vegetables. Peaches, apples, strawberries, and cherries are among the most contaminated fruits. If nothing else, buy organics for these foods. To eliminate residue hormones and antibiotics from your diet, buy organic milk.
What words of advice can you give to not only people who have been diagnosed with cancer?
The best advice I can give is an old Buddhist saying: Every human being is the author of his own health.
