Soulforce Gay Activists Arrested At Jerry Falwell's Liberty University
No doubt there are gay and lesbian students at Liberty who can't come out because they would face expulsion.
It's ironic that there is no liberty at Liberty University; the school of higher learning does not abide by the words of the Bible: "In Christ there is liberty and equality."
Twenty members of the Soulforce Equality Ride were arrested as they attempted to discuss the lack of equality for gay students at Liberty University.
Campus police charged all of those arrested with trespassing, and two protestors faced additional charges of inciting trespassing.
A university, even one that espouses Christian values, should be open to all points of view. The members of Soulforce should have been welcomed with open arms, instead of by a phalanx of campus security.
Liberty University was Soulforce's its first stop of a nationwide "Equality Ride" tour to promote gay rights. Let's hope that they will have a more "Christ-like" reception at their other stops.
There is absolutely nothing immoral, wrong or sinful about homosexuality, but assuming homosexuality is a sin, why weren't the members of Soulforce welcomed at Liberty University? Didn't Jesus Christ "break bread" with prostitutes, lepers and other outcasts of society?
Homosexuality is a normal human expression, and homosexuals can be found everywhere, even in Jerry Falwell's citadel of fundamentalism.
I'm an optimist, I believe that someday Soulforce will have an office at Liberty University, but probably not until Jerry Falwell retires or goes to that great big circus tent in the sky.
