Sometimes It Can Be Hard Out Here For A Woman

Judy Ramsook
I have not seen the movie, Hustle and Flow, but judging from the previews shown on television and reviews, it seems to be quite entertaining, then comes the musical number from the flick It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp.

It’s something that can lead one to ponder, it can be hard for just about anyone. Similarly, while on the subject of a movie that’s about prostitution and pimping, even though there are now numerous laws that can protect a woman, it can still be hard to be one.

Certainly, such laws can protect a woman from being groped, fondled or told demeaning things to in the work place, but that does not necessarily mean sexual harrassment is still not an issue.

Such cases have been occurring, but most companies are silently handling the matter without allowing news of those events to get to the press. Some women though, make it seem easy to be a woman.

For example, when one sees an attractive female in the work place or walking down the street, one might think how easy it is to be her, but he really has no idea what she has to tolerate in order to cope.

Some of her less attractive friends might be envious of her good looks, and as for finding a mate, she might be lucky if she can find one who likes her yes, for her beauty but also for who she is under all of it. Good looking women have bad days too.

From an early age, she is told about the dangers of staying out later than usual with friends, and walking along lonely alleys and so on. We have all heard the lectures.

If such a girl has parents who are too caring, she may not be free to go out with her friends because her parents will be embarrassed if it is later found out their daughter is pregnant out of wedlock. So what’s such a girl to do?

More times than one can count, she comes to view marriage as a sort of escape from such a suffocating and sheltered life. It is seen as a rite of passage, for now that she is married, no one can restrict her from going wherever she wants.

Or as soon as she old and financially independent enough, she moves out on her own.

It might never be a hundred percent easy to be a woman, for she has to be on her guard at all times.

It could be during an encounter with a suspicious stranger or in the work place with a colleague who stares at her a little too long, but she does cope the best she can with what she has. That is what makes it seem easy to be a woman or difficult, depending of course on the situation.
