Horses, Cowboys and Wildlife

Cassandra Bell
For many, this time of year is the time for vacation: the time to get away from the city life and relax. Many dream of wilderness adventures: backpacking, horseback riding, and fly fishing in the beautiful high country, amidst towering, rugged mountains which reach into the crisp, vivid blue sky and clear, fresh streams, where colorful trout are plentiful, flow gently; a place where bald eagles soar gracefully and where the wilds are untamed, where moose and elk can be seen wandering the vast valley and surefooted Bighorn Sheep can be seen in the distance, standing on the glorious rugged hills and peaks.

It is truly a place where the deer and the antelope really do play. It is also a place where a rustic looking, though cozy and inviting log cabin awaits you after each day of adventure.

Wyoming's highest wilderness guest ranch, The Diamond Four Ranch, located in the heart of the Wind River Mountain Range, offers the dream getaway that many people are yearning for this time of year. Wildlife watching, horseback riding, natural history hikes, guided pack trips, hunting, and fly fishing are a few of the numerous activities that await you in the nearby Shoshone National Forest.

Jim said, “folks come to their wilderness ranch from all over the country and the world to enjoy the wilderness and mountain serenity. We (Jim and Mary) hand built all the ranch cabins and lodge from native pine and guests can relax in rustic comfort while on vacation here. Our ranch is so remote we do not have electricity, but all the cabins have propane lights and the shower house has a propane water heater. I have been guiding in the Wind River Range for 38 seasons and love the rugged lifestyle. We have raised our daughters on the ranch and they are quite confident and competent guides too."

Thanks to Jim and Mary Allen for allowing me to interview them and for allowing me to use their pictures for my news story.
