DONīT BE FOOLED WHEN PURCHASING A CARPET

Michael Joseph
When you're looking for a new carpet to put in your home. The first thing to look for is the quality of the carpet. Nylon is the most popular fiber. Nylon is a good choice for all traffic areas because it is durable and static free, maintains fiber height, and resists soiling, staining, and mildew. Nylon fibers, which are dyed after production, maintain color. Nylon comes in BFC known as bulk continuous filament. These continuous fibers are less likely to unravel. Stapled yarn carpet is made of short lengths of fibers that are spun together and the tips of the yarn are made to appear to look full, which can cause fuzz to appear on the surface of your new carpet for several months.

You may pay more for the BFC nylon carpet. In return you will get a carpet that will look and wear better than a stapled yarn nylon carpet for many years. Donīt be fooled thinking one nylon is as good as the next, because itīs not true. The old saying is you get what you pay for.

Now that you purchased your new nylon carpet, what is required maintenance to maintain the new look of your carpet? There are a number of ways of caring for your new carpet. You donīt want to put anything on the carpet that can cause a buildup. This can be caused by over cleaning and not extracting what was put into or onto the carpet, which can attract oils from your skin such as bare feet to stick to the carpet. Can you remember a time when you had your first carpet and you cleaned it and about 2 weeks after the cleaning it seemed to look worst than before you cleaned it or the traffic areas seem to show more than usual. This is called a build up of the cleaning agent or carpet cleaning detergent that is being used and detergent left behind can act like a magnate to dirt and oils from your skin or even the oils from your pet. This could be your number one enemy of preventing your carpet of staying clean and looking good.

Olefin (polypropylene) is the next-best seller after nylon. These fibers are colorfast because the production process involves mixing polypropylene with dyes. Olefin works best in loop carpets such as Berbers. It is strong (resisting abrasion), mildew resistant, moisture resistant, and easy to clean. However, olefin can be easy to crush depending on the pile. Be aware of some Olefins will have the tendency to appear worn or matted down after a short period of time. The Olefin yarn thatīs been scoured several times at the factory before made into carpet will have most of the oils cleaned from the yarn and are not so apt to mat or crush as easily. You will find most of your Berber carpets are made of Olefin and Nylon blend. The Nylon will give the carpet memory and wonīt be so easily crushed.
