NRA Members and Gun Owners, Beware of Tougher Gun Laws Soon to Come

David M. Bresnahan
Gun owners should not get too excited about the Supreme Court decision that the Second Amendment is just exactly what it claims to be, protection for the right of individuals to own firearms.

Gun control advocates are already hard at work to make life tough on gun owners, in spite of the Constitution. The Supreme Court made confirmed that individuals have a right to own firearms, but it also made it clear that restrictions and controls – including licensing – are acceptable.

That was the ammunition the gun control liberals, like presidential candidate Barack Obama, needed. You can bet there will be a scramble to revise current laws in D.C. and elsewhere. Watch and listen to the rhetoric coming from the left for clues on their plans.

Now that the Supreme Court has ruled, there is a need to revise existing laws all over the country in order to comply, and that opens the door for gun control advocates to jump in and actually make gun laws more restrictive, not less.

In a way, the historic decision gives them a great opportunity. If gun owners view the Supreme Court decision as a reason to become complacent instead of diligent, they will actually lose as gun laws become more restrictive.

Gun owners beware! The need to scrutinize existing laws in light of the Supreme Court decision gives a great opportunity to gun control advocates. Under the guise of compliance with the Supreme Court, they will actually toughen gun laws and make life even more difficult for gun owners.

The Supreme Court decision confirms the right to own guns, but it also made clear that there can be restrictions placed on how guns are obtained, where guns can be carried, who can have them, and so on. The battle is far from over. Celebrate for a moment, but this is not a time to relax. Now is the time to be even more diligent than ever before.

I am a proud life member of both the National Rifle Association and the Gun Owners of America. I am a NRA/BSA firearms instructor, and I regularly teach Boy Scouts shooting merit badges, which includes firearm safety and how to shoot rifles, shotguns, black powder firearms, and pistols for Venturer Scouts. As a former member of the Utah House of Representatives I co-sponsored legislation on concealed carry to make it easier for citizens to posses concealed firearms.

I am genuinely thrilled by the historic decision of the Supreme Court, but at the same time I realize that the battle is not over. The only thing that has happened is that the gun control advocates have been given an opportunity to win big if gun owners rest on their laurels and think that the issue has been settled once and for all.

Gun owners need to participate in every discussion, hearing, and public meeting where gun laws are being considered at every level of government. Be a part of EVERY meeting and discussion as gun laws are revised. Do not give them the opportunity they think they now have.
