Al-Qaeda's Al-Zawahri Urges Hamas to Continue Fighting Israel
In yet another Al-Qaeda video broadcast on Al-Jazeera television, al-Zawahri announced his continued support for Hamas and its refusal to recognize Israel's right to exist. Hamas won a huge, unexpected victory in the Palestinian parliamentary election last January, and they are involved in forming a new government.
Al-Zawahri accused the PNA leaders of selling out Palestine by entering into peace agreements with the Israelis. He called the U.S.-backed road map peace plan "surrender accords," and advised Hamas to avoid the same trap.
Al-Zawahri said, "The path of prophets and messengers, which is ... jihad, until the soil will be liberated and the Islamic states rise again."
Regarding the cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad published by newspapers in many European countries, al-Zawahri called on Muslims to boycott those countries where the cartoons were printed.
"They did it on purpose and they continue to do it without apologizing," he said. "We consider the publication of the caricatures to be part of a crusade against Muslims led by the United States," he said.
But it's widely accepted the United States had nothing to do with the publication of the offending cartoons.
While the intelligence community has no evidence of tactical cooperation between Hamas and Al-Qaeda, both groups share common characteristics including hatred for Israel and the US as well as fundamental Islamism.
Other terrorist groups operating in the Palestinian territory are the Islamic Jihad and Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade.
