Where are we headed - that's the Question?
Really the similarities are too profound to dismiss them my dear friends. America had better wake up and see what is happening right before our eyes before it is too late. There are just too many analogies to dismiss the possibility of a distinct parallel between the Nazis and the present administration. What with all of the propaganda. The lies. The rhetoric. The nationalism. The flag waving. The pretext of a 'preventive war', that by the way had been planned years prior, by the members of the Presidents team no less. The total disregard of International law and International standards of justice. The disappearance of 'undesirable' aliens. The threats against protesters. The spying on ordinary citizens without following proscribed procedures. The encouragement to spy on one's neighbors and then report them to the government. The arrogance in declaring "Mission accomplished" when nothing was farther from the truth. The exorbitant expenditures for military purposes. The exhortations about the 'Axis of Evil'. The illusion of 'goodness' and spouting off about "You're either with us or you're against us." The establishment of 'Homeland Security'. The Media blackout of non-approved issues. The Blacklisting of protesters - including the no-fly lists and photographing dissenters at rallies. The dehumanization of foreigners. The incarceration without allowing legal counsel. The list just goes on and on and where it stops no one knows.
This really leaves little doubt in my mind that there are lots of reasons to compare Hitler's rise to power and the recent events taking place right here in the United States. The parallels are too similar to flip under the rug. Could Bush be another Hitler? Maybe and maybe not, but with every incriminating event that comes along the parallel grows and we dismiss them at our peril. Is Karl Rove following Hitler's playbook to plan for world domination? That is the stated intent of both of them! Don't take my word for that just take a peek at "The Project for the New American Century". The Project for the New American Century, or PNAC, is a Washington-based think tank created in 1997. Above all else, PNAC desires and demands one
thing: The establishment of a global American empire to bend the will of all nations. They chafe at the idea that the United States, the last remaining superpower, does not do more by way of economic and military force to bring the rest of the world under the umbrella of a new socio-economic Pax Americana.
The fundamental essence of PNAC's ideology can be found in a White Paper produced in September of 2000 entitled "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century." In it, PNAC outlines what is required of America to create the global empire they envision. According to PNAC, America must:
- Reposition permanently based forces to Southern Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East;
- Modernize U.S. forces, including enhancing our fighter aircraft, submarine and surface fleet capabilities;
- Develop and deploy a global missile defense system, and develop a strategic dominance of space;
- Control the "International Commons" of cyberspace;
- Increase defense spending to a minimum of 3.8 percent of gross domestic product, up from the 3 percent currently spent.
Pretty far out expectations if you ask me and they certainly sound very similar to the plans that Hitler espoused in his day. From the Reichstag fire to the landing at Nuremberg to the motto of "Gott Mit Uns" to the unprovoked invasion and occupation of Iraq to the insistence that peace was the ultimate goal, the line is unbroken and unwavering. What worries me is what may still come to pass. The possibility of a reign more savage and barbaric even than that of the Nazis. There seems to be little if any Democratic opposition. We may not be headed for a Nazi Germany, but it could be a whole lot worse.
