An earthquake shook the remote northern Andes near the Bolivian border in Chile Monday killing an elderly man while injuring several others, government officials reported.

The quake was registered at 6:48 p.m. and measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, U.S. Geological Survey and Chilean officials confirmed.

Communications and the power supply were interrupted as the quake ravaged this remote and mostly unpopulated region of the Chilean Andes.

The capitol of Chile, Santiago, and some 940 miles north of the Andes did not report any effects of the quake.

Other than the reported death and injuries, the quake managed only to destroy a few homes and buildings including damaging some in the nearby towns of Calama and Chuquicamata.
