When you are looking for a telephone number, or when you have one that you don´t recognize, there are two very similar yet very different tools that you can use. If you know what each one does, you will know where to go first. That might shorten your search significantly.

When you want to find a phone number to go with a name, you want to try the forward type of phone lookup. This means you want to find an old friend and you don´t have their number. You can enter their name into a search to see if you can find that number. This is one of the more common number searches, and can be very effective and effortless.

You can find many types of forward telephone search, but there are two places where you should always go first. The online directories for both residential and business phone number listings for landlines are a good first start. The white pages are great for individuals, and you can use the yellow pages for any type of business number. Unless the number is unlisted, or the party has opted out of an online listing, you should find them this way in short order.


A reverse search, as you may have already guessed, does this function in reverse. That means you have a number, but you have no idea who is on the other end of the call. This is something that was once only used by law enforcement and other legal organizations. It is now something that anyone with a computer can do. You enter the number into the search and then see if any matches come up. There are both free and fee-based reverse phone lookups that you can try.
