Verdiem to Release Solution for Energy-Wasting Computers

Will Spencer
Verdiem has just released the Surveyor 5.0. It is the latest version of its Surveyor line of energy saving applications. The Surveyor program is a power management program that reduces the amount of energy used by a computer. The main improvement on the program is the ability to further reduce the energy consumption of a computer when it is in idle mode.

One feature of the Surveyor 5.0 program is the ability to induce an idle state. Some computers have difficulty going into idle state even if they have been inactive for a period of time. This problem is known as Insomnia. The state is caused by disk activity or malware. Since the idle state is a built in feature, it cannot be changed within the PC. The Surveyor 5.0 software solves this by using its own timer that can override the operating system and signal an idle state.

Surveyor programs are designed for the use of large companies with extensive computer networks. The Surveyor 5.0 application has better reporting power and provides IT managers with an improved capability for centralized management. The program is estimated to cut power consumption by approximately 60%.

The program allows administrators to set when a computer will be awakened from an idle state. The options are for the machine to turn active by a keyboard stroke, the movement of a mouse, or by a trigger in the local access network. Once installed into a network, the program allows the IT administrator to determine all the power and energy needs of a computer.

The Surveyor program is estimated to save about $20 to $60 per machine. This can be translated to about $500000 worth of savings. Aside from saving money on energy bills, the developer also boasts of reducing the carbon footprint of companies. Verdiem declared that in 2007, the software it released saved its clients $6 Million and prevented 38,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases from being produced.
