Thurman Munson Memorabilia Will Be Sold This Summer
Munson was practicing takeoffs and landings at Akron-Canton regional airport near his Ohio home in August of 1979 when he crashed and was killed.
The former team captain's World Series rings, MVP trophy and that final uniform will be among the items sold during the All Star Fan Fest at Yankee Stadium. Hunt Auctions of Exton, PA will conduct the sale.
Other pieces of baseball collectibles slated to be sold in the July 14-15 auction are Lou Gehrig's warmup jacket dating to the final day of his 2,130 consecutive game streak, the ball Babe Ruth hit for his 712th home run and a Jackie Robinson game used bat.
The Munson collection consists of more than 140 items, including a custom-made Mercedes-Benz convertible and a personal World Series trophy from the Yankees' 1978 title.
Another Yankee great's memorabilia is also in the same auction. Whitey Ford's collection will also be sold, including a ball signed for him by President Kennedy, Ford's 1961 World Series MVP award, his 1950 Yankees road flannel jersey and a signed game-used glove.
