Title: The Creative Spirit: Stories of 20th Century Artists

AUTHOR: Emily-Jane Hills Orford- Illustrated by Olivia McGuire

What goes on in the unique mind of an artist like Kandinsky or Picasso? What inspired them to create work that challenged the senses of the art community of their time? How would they have responded to their critics?

"The Creative Spirit"is a clever and entertaining idea from the fertile mind of Emily Jane Hills Orford. Each chapter focuses on a renowned artist of the 20th century, and begins with an imagined conversation between the artist and a friend or family about his or her art, and its perception by the art community. Each dialogue is followed by a brief but enlightened paragraph or two on the factual life of the artist. It also contains a teacher´s resource section, with sample questions on each artist, followed by an appendix of terms and a respectable bibliography.

I have read and reviewed this author before, and this book lives up to the enjoyable writing style of her other work. The artists´ conversations are entertaining and insightful. While purely fictional, it feels authentic, and I am certain they were created after a great deal of research that insured that authenticity. The idea itself is brilliant, useful for both art teachers and those merely interested in creativity. Yet for me the most remarkable thing about this book was the uncontrollable urge I felt as I finished each chapter to go to the internet and search for samples of the artist´s work. The chapters left me curious, and eager to learn more.

Emily-Jane Hills Orford is a proud Canadian author who has an interest in many creative pursuits, including art and music. Her previous work includes three novels: Spring, Summer, and Ukulele Yukon, in which she explores her love of music.

I highly recommend this inspiring book to anyone who loves art, or is curious about the motivation of those with a creative spirit. Reviewer: Nancy Morris, Allbooks Reviews.
