A man who brutally raped his 14-year-old stepdaughter as she lay dying after a fall knocked her unconscious has been sentenced to serve for nine years in a British prison.

George McKee sexually assaulted Kerry Muchan after she fell down the stairs and was knocked unconscious at the family home in Paisley, Scotland.

The teenager, who had become ill after taking a cocktail of alcohol and drugs, died hours after the attack.

McKee, 50, stood expressionless as Judge Lord Phillip passed sentence at the High Court in Glasgow and said his crime had filled the public with "revulsion and horror".

He imposed an extended sentence of 12 years, of which nine will be served in custody. The judge told McKee that if he had not pleaded guilty on January 24, he would have been jailed for 12 years.

On the night of the assault on July 23, 2005, Kerry had taken alcohol, cannabis and Valium after going out with her sister Amanda, 16, and friends.

When she arrived home she was put in her own bed by friends as she had fallen over several times during the evening. She later got up from her bed and fell down the stairs in her home.

Her aunt Hazel found her unconscious in the early hours and thinking the teenager had passed out through drink, put her in the recovery position and went to her house round the corner to fetch the youngster's mother.

McKee was told not to move Kerry but when left alone with his victim carried her up to his bedroom, where he raped her. He was found in bed with his stepdaughter by a family friend and the victim's sister, Amanda.

Kerry was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where she was pronounced dead shortly before 5am.

A post-mortem examination found that she died of head injuries sustained in her series of falls.

Outside the court, Kerry's mother Lorna, 38, said before getting into a car: "I'm glad with the sentence."
