Terrorism, Technology Take Over, and Disasters

Cassandra Bell
Many people do not want to hear "doomsday" scenarios. But the truth is, our world is changing, rapidly, whether or not we want it to change. It's far from the same world with which our Grandparents used to be familiar, when they were young. Global warming is an increasing threat, and I might add, one that is beyond man's control. Terrorism has emerged from the darkness, and from seemingly out of nowhere, causing confusion and alarm to almost every one of us. I used to think the world was a safe place, now I'm not so sure. In fact it is one of the scenarios where "you can run but you can't hide."

Now apparently exists the food scare, that terrorists may attempt to tamper with our precious food supply. Grocery stores, schools, malls, the work place, no place is safe anymore from the evil villains, who are seemingly everywhere throughout the world. They are like snakes slithering around in the dark, waiting to attack next victim with their deadly venom. And there is nothing American citizens, like myself, can do to stop them.

With Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea all having their fair share of weapons of mass destruction, Nuclear weapons, one question, which has traveled through time, presents itself in the mind of many-why? They all want power, they all want to be the most powerfully militarily and economically. And they know they can't be, if the number one spot is taken by the United States.

With technology doubling every two years, and robots no longer a "fairy tale," technology is beginning to control our society. As a child, I was familiar with the futuristic, though what many considered unrealistic at the time: cartoon show "The Jetsons." Rosie the human-like Robot maid, who cooked and cleaned, was nothing more than a cartoon, something from someone's imagination, not part of real life at all. Nowadays, robots are a real invention, and they are part of "real life", in the sense that they do exist.

Fifteen years ago, many people did not have an idea of what the internet was; now in almost every household, there is at least one "online "computer. Who would have ever imagined such a change in such a short period of time? Who could have ever imagined that many of us would be relying on such an unthinkable invention, an invention which has become as much a part of one's daily activity as using a microwave? A significant part of their everyday life?

How about an easily transportable music jukebox, another unforeseen, amazing invention? Ten years ago, how many would have ever envisioned those remarkable, little transportable devices, many of which have the capacity to contain hundreds or even thousands of our favorite songs, right at our fingertips? The honest answer is: not many, if at all.

Now, looking back upon how much the world has changed within the past few years, think of how much it will continue to change. The many events, inventions that many people thought would never happen, did happen. Now apply that to the future. Many people a year or so from now, will be saying to themselves "I had no idea something like this could happen." But, guess what? It did.

I believe that security will become freedom's trap. With security issues facing this great Nation, since that horrid, fateful day, September 11th, one wonders the impact that security will have upon the freedom of the citizens of the world.

As many of you are aware, numerous transactions require a credit card. Perhaps to ensure more security, microchips will be mandatory, and will be able to pinpoint the location of anyone on earth? Just think about it, the many years, the story of your whole life embedded on a tiny little microchip. That is not such a far fetched idea, unfortunately. Many people are already using microchips for their beloved pets. They want security for their pets, an assurance that the microchip can guarantee. Think of how appealing the guarantee of security would be for many, against robbers, rapists ,and murderers, including terrorists. Imagine the scenario: Two men, wearing masks, in an attempt to conceal their identity, rob a gas station late at night, at a time when no one else is around, except the one working behind the counter. Their location is pinpointed, and they are quickly seized by the proper authorities. Some of these people easily escape and are never caught. With microchips, they probably wouldn't attempt such a crime, or if they did, their exact location would be pinpointed, and they would be seized immediately.

What awaits us?

The fact is, many will never know until it has already happened, when it is too late.

Here is a tribute I recently wrote for America:

She is America the beautiful, a Nation blessed with the privilege of fulfilling her dreams; a Nation blessed with a strong heart to overcome the hopelessness and seemingly impossible. She is a Nation of bravery and strength, of prosperity, and dignity, and will bravely face her fears: this great land with equal opportunity for all; the great land of freedom. Though the dawn of an unknown future awaits, a time of uncertainty during these confounding times faces her, she will stand strongly and fight courageously against the evils of the world. The dawn of this great Nation still rings the triumph of freedom within her borders, where the hopes and dreams of many rest upon her wings.

During times of peace, times of war, times of sorrow, and times of joy, may the Lady of Liberty forever hold her torch high. May the bells of liberty continue to be heard throughout the land.

May the noble Eagle soar above the obstacles of uncertainty and may she forever continue to fly freely, unharmed and unshaken during all unrest.
