Former WorldCom CEO Pleads for Lighter Sentence

Matthew Cole
NEW YORK- Bernard Ebbers, 63, the former WorldCom Inc. CEO asked a federal judge Friday June 10th for lessening his sentence. In a brief filed Friday Ebbers’ attorneys cited his good character, age, poor health and the low risk of his becoming a repeat offender while in U.S. District Court in New York.

While they dropped off the massive filing Ebbers’ attorney said that the former CEO was “profoundly sorry” for his $11 billion accounting fraud that cost many their jobs and investors their money in 2002. Along with the filing there were also over 169 letters of support for Ebbers.

Ebbers is scheduled to be sentenced next month July 13th. He was found guilty on nine counts of masterminding the fraud that eventually led to the downfall of WorldCom.
