Janet Reno is the first woman Attorney General of the United States of America. Nominated by President Bill Clinton on February 11, 1993. Reno was reappointed as Attorney General in 19971 crashed her famous red pickup on the afternoon of June 10th in Marathon, Florida near the Florida Keys.

The former U.S. Attorney General was driving south on U.S. 1 near mile marker 52.5 in her 1999 Ford pickup when she struck the 1999 Ford driven by Kenneth Michels, 52, of nearby Key Colony Beach.

Neither of the drivers was injured in the crash however Reno has been charged with careless driving. According to the Florida Highway Patrol Michels had stopped for a red light where U.S. 1 and 109th Street intersect. Reno coming from behind Michels vehicle failed to stop in time to avoid the collision. The result was both vehicles came to rest in the outbound lane or south lane.

Reno, the nation’s top prosecutor under President Clinton, helped reduce crime and violence by incarcerating repeat offenders, had no comment about her accident. During her tenure as Attorney General her focus was finding alternative forms of punishment for first time, non-violent offenders.

In 2002 Reno was a Florida gubernatorial candidate.
