AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL IS BEING ECONOMICAL WITH THE TRUTH IN SOMALIA
Recent allegation of Amnesty International on Ethiopian troops in Somalia is nothing but hasty, unfounded and simply unprofessional. It should be known at the outset that Ethiopian troops have an impeccable reputation for maintaining not only peace and stability but also for helping the community at large within nations where they have been invited and were they were sent as part of the United Nations and the African Union's mission.
From the early fifties and sixtees, Ethiopian troops conducted the UN mission in Korea and Congo with dignity and honor; as a result, they left behind unforgettable legacy and heroism that is still remembered by new generations of those respective countries. Further, during the fight against colonization, yet again the Ethiopian army played an important, if not an un-matched role to help brotherly nations such as Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, etc; and on the fight against apartheid in South Africa. The role of the Ethiopian Army played in that regard is simply impeccable and the record is there for anyone´s perusal.
In most recent times, the Ethiopian army has played a pivotal role helping brotherly countries such as Rwanda, Liberia, Sudan in their fight against their national cataclysms. Here, one must bear in mind that the civic work such as helping the poor children, women, the elderly and other vulnerable group of the society within those different countries where the Ethiopian army has been part of the international peace keeping mission. In doing so, precious lives were at risk in order to ensure global peace and stability. Consequently, the Ethiopian army has reaped rewards, accolades and praises from international bodies such as the United Nations, the African Union and other respected governmental as well as non-governmental institutions alike. Those awards were given as recognition of their high level discipline not to mention the great sacrifices for peace & stability of the region and to the objective track record of the Ethiopian Army. Ignoring all these facts, Amnesty International now wakes up and tries to hood wink international public opinion through its mendacious claim and unfounded allegations against Ethiopian troops in Somalia.
Why did Amnesty International chose to listen to what it calls witnesses and be guided by the barons of lies of Al-Qaida, Al-Shebab or other terrorist groups that have been messing-up Somalia for years and rushed to point fingers upon the Ethiopian mission in Somalia.
I ask Amnesty International a simple question and that is:
Where was Amnesty International when Somalia was messed up with all those terrorist groups from within Somalia and other neighboring countries?
Where was Amnesty International when the Somalian people were asking for help to get rid of those terrorist groups who imposed their own rule in Somalia and deny the Somali people of their basic and fundamental rights within their own country? Most importantly, where was Amnesty International when Somalia was in turmoil by almost all terrorists, fundamentalists and other ruthless insurgents from within and abroad?
When Somalia was surfing in a state of utter turmoil, we never heard of Amnesty International, did we?. Where was Amnesty International when young and old innocent Ethiopians were being killed by trigger happy terrorists, insurgents both inside Ethiopia and within Somalia or are we to say that Ethiopian lives don't count as humans to Amnesty International? I will leave the answer to Amnesty International who often conducts its mediocre research from its very comfortable offices in North America and Europe, and definitely not from the discomfort war zone area.
It is therefore evident that the report was the result of Amnesty International's hidden agenda of being tendentious in its apparent analysis of the objective reality of the situation in Somalia.
Generally, it is wise for organizations such as Amnesty International to look at the root-causes of the problem in order to recommend a long-lasting or sustainable solution. For that, a scientific, realistic and on the ground research is of a paramount importance. Paying heed to unfounded allegations and making hasty and unrealistic conclusion, I believe, will hurt the reputation of any reputable organizations and it will further put the organizations credibility in question. Therefore, Amnesty International must look at what Somalia looked few years back and what it looks like presently; most importantly, Amnesty International ought to look at the relative peace and stability brought about in Somalia and the sacrifices put forward in that regard by the Ethiopian army. If Amnesty International is true to itself, the role that the Ethiopian army played in that regard is quite apparent. Therefore, instead of pointing fingers on the Ethiopian army, Amnesty International should ask the international community to contribute financially, morally and more importantly militarily to help the Ethiopian Army who has been almost single handedly scarifying itself to maintain peace and stability in a brotherly nation: Somalia. It is indeed the Ethiopian army that contributed its due share for the maintenance of a durable peace and peaceful coexistence amongst communities in Somalia. Beyond the call of peace keeping duty, the Ethiopian army has been engaged in an exemplary act of civic duties such as those mentioned above as well.
I believe history will remember the sacrifices that the Ethiopian army has put in Somalia and more importantly, I believe it won't be long when the Somalian people will have the chance to enjoy peace, stability, law and order in their nation and live in harmony with their neighbors.
