Fly Fishing on the River Wye
The River Wye is 185 miles (297 km) long its source is at Plynlimon which is the highest peak in the Cambrian mountains of Mid-Wales. The river probably takes its name from the old Welsh word Wy, one of the many words that mean water.
The Wye has some of the most spectacular fly fishing in Wales with healthy stocks of both brown trout (Salmo Trutta) and grayling (Thymalus Thymalus).
Day ticket access to the river for the roving fly fishing angler is about the best you can find with much of the river being available through the Wye and Usk Foundation.
Due to the size of the River Wye and the excellent access to both the main river and its tributaries this river offers a great deal of choice water.
The best of the fly fishing is above Hay on Wye and due to great public access to the tributaries it is possible to find water that is fishable with the fly very soon after heavy rain. This is especially true on the tributaries that run predominantly over bedrock such as the R.Irfon and the R. Camarch
Fly fishing on the River Wye is available all year round as it contains both brown trout and grayling whose season run from 1st March to 30th September and the 16th June to the 11th March respectively.
As the river flows through many areas of outstanding natural beauty there is no end of accommodation to suit all budgets.
Frank Williams is a fly fishing instructor based in the Forest of Dean.
