YOUR PET, MY PET PEEVE

Doreen Shenassa
What is it with people and their pooches? Dog lovers: you won’t like what you’re about to hear. The luxury and lavish lifestyles you provide your pets with is down right ridiculous.

Stop treating your hound like a human! It’s a dog. It, he, she whatever. Don’t be insulted when the wrong pronoun is used to refer to your darling pooch. “He” is generic, so I’ll use it, but sure enough, an annoying owner will correct me. “She’s a girl.” You know what I have to say about that? It’s a dog! Get over it. The dog doesn’t care what you call it.

And I really don’t care to hear stories about Rex, and his mannerisms. Or “cute” stories about how the two of you dozed off on the sofa watching CSI last night. Tell me tales of your toddler’s first steps or your 6-year old’s accomplishments.

How about the irritating co-worker who flaunts a framed snapshot of his pup and sets it beside his computer at work? What’s the deal with that?

Stop expecting that I’ll love your pet the instant I meet him. People, Americans in particular, don’t just bond and embrace when introduced. So why should I warm up to an animal at all?

A barking, slobbery, sniffing hound charging toward me, and licking my mouth is not endearing.

And the way some men behave in the presence of a dog is just sickening. The manliest man turns into a baby-talkin’ girl.

And the money that’s spent on rescuing animals, when people are starving in Africa. There are orphans who need homes, countless diseases to cure and research to be done.

I wasn’t attacked when I was a youngster. I’m not traumatized nor am I allergic. Does this make me a heartless monster or animal hater? I think not.

I’m fascinated with creatures and their habitats. I would never harm any living thing (unless it’s Saddam Hussein.)

Puppies are adorable, and make great companions. But treat a dog, like a dog.

Keep it in the backyard. Let it run around and dig holes.

From the doggie fur on the bedspread, to stains on the sidewalk, I’m not ok with any of it. Your pet, is my pet peeve….Next
