BZP Powder... New Zealands Secret High - But is it safe?

Mike Gracia
Benzylpiperazine or BZP has been marketed under various names such as "Nemesis" and "Frenzy" as a ´legal high´. Its effects are said to be similar to those produced by amphetamines.

The first recreational users of the drug were noted in the US in the early 90s. At that time BZP was legal all over the world. When widespread recreational use began to become prevalent, the drug quickly moved on the US list of illegal substances.

BZP is a derivative of piperazine, which is produced as hydrochloride salt for recreational use. In countries where the substance is legal it is produced by small laboratories.

These products are often sold as dietary supplements, thus avoiding tighter controls than it were sold as a drug. When used as a recreational stimulant the effects of BZP said the nearly indistinguishable to dextroamphetamine a commonly available, illegal ´party´ drug.

The effects are usually increased perception of certain sensations becoming extremely heightened, including those of taste, colours and in particular users report, an extremely heightened awareness of perception of music. Also, euphoria, mixed with heightened alertness and a general feeling of all-round ´well being´.

These effects are believed to be more long-lasting than the illegal amphetamine products, with this euphoria lasting from four to eight hours, dependent on dosage.

In New Zealand, where the drug is legal, over 20 BZP million pills have been sold, there have been no reported deaths or serious side-effects associated with the use of the drug directly. Although use of the BZP, when mixed with illegal substances, has caused serious undesirable side-effects.

As in many countries, the drug was legal in the UK for some time until the MHRA (Medicine and Health Regulatory Authority), deemed that as it had been previously used in the production of medicines in the UK it contravened the medicines act.

Although BZP is not itself listed as illegal, the MHRA as stated that the drug contains a salt of piperazine making it necessary to include it as a drug that cannot be sold without licence.

Under the present law it is illegal to sell BZP for consumption without a license. The effect was to halt the sale of so-called ´legal ecstasy´. However, it is not illegal in the UK to possess so or make available for sale BZP. It is illegal to sell BZP for the purpose of consumption.

In addition, the sale of BZP and its related substances and ingredients is legal for the purposes of research. On this basis there are several legitimate websites that offer BZP powder for sale for the purposes of research. All of these sites go to great lengths to distance themselves from the so-called 'legal highs' shops that are also available online.
