Being Informed About Current Affairs, Some People Just Don't Care

Judy Ramsook
Saw a video clip of some British soldiers who pulled some Iraqi protesters into their compound, locked the gate and started physically abusing said protesters.

At the time of the news piece, the video of the incident had not been authenticated. However, soon after, there was a video clip of British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, stating that there would be an investigation into the matter.

Heard of Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shooting a fellow hunter. Some members of the media wonder why it took such a long time, over a day, for the information about the incident to reach the press.

Sometimes, especially in this age of twenty four hour news stations and the many ways there are to receive information, more so via the internet, one thing that does amaze me is learning of those individuals who choose not to watch the news.

Some claim, there is too much negativity, or if they were to see something that is too graphic, the image will linger in their minds and might even make for a night without sleep. Some people take things to extremes though.

If you keep up with current affairs you might have an idea of how annoying it can be when, say, you want to discuss a certain newsworthy event with some one you think is aware of the goings on around him or her.

You are then surprised when you learn that not only has the person with whom you are trying to converse not heard of the matter you might find so exciting, but you find yourself doing something else as well.

You might be explaining to that individual of the event, and while you are doing so, you realise the person to whom you are talking seems as if he or she is not even interested in learning about the matter.

He or she shows visible signs, such as losing the eye contact, then comes the lowering of his or her head, at which point, you, the speaker may pause.

When this pause ensues, you also realise that person was just not interested in the news bit at all, which brings something else to mind as well.

Some one once told me the reason he does not vote come election time is because he does not care about what those politicians do. If their actions do not effect what he is doing, he sees no point in voting. Sometimes, I think the same philosophy applies to the people who do not watch the news.

So long as what is happening out there in the world is not effecting what they are doing in their lives, they do not care. On a personal note, there might come a time when everyone might have to stop and care, because just when you think whatever is going on around you has no importance in your life, some day it could.

It’s good to know what’s going on around you, because sometimes, it’s what you don’t know that can turn around and hurt you, the person who has chosen not to be informed about news events far and wide or even close to home for that matter.
