So Much Hatred

Judy Ramsook
People have been hating each other for ages. That is nothing new. There are some people among us who might not want to take a trip to Germany or purchase a German made product because of an incident known as the holocaust.

Similarly, some Americans will not want to be caught dead or alive purchasing a Japanese made electronic gadget or car, truck, SUV or van for that matter, because of the incident at Pearl Harbour on Decemebr 7th 1941.

On a more personal level though, something recently came to my attention via some one else who is without a doubt, brutally honest.

That something involves a certain amount of hatred towards people of East Indian descent. Let me make this clear, first of all, I have never been to India, my ancestors came to the West Indies back when England was in search of indentured labourers to work the sugar cane fields. As a result, when slavery was abolished, some of the East Indians who were already living in the West Indies, stayed there.

It is known that in every race there is good and bad, but sometimes when some one keeps hearing of all the people who are supposed to hate people from your race especially without knowing why; sooner or later you may want to know why.

I recently learned one of the reasons some Jamaicans of African descent hate some East Indians is because back when slavery was in full swing, it was learned by a few Jamaicans of African descent that some East Indians were using human manure as fertilizer.

As a result, the Jamaicans of African descent supposedly hate some people of East Indian origin because they, (the Jamaican blacks) view the East Indians as being unclean.

Personally, I have never been to Jamaica, but I know a Jamaican who has some East Indian lineage. He claims whenever he goes there, to Jamaica, he is made fun of by his fellow black Jamaicans for the way they look down on some East Indians due to the above mentioned reason.

No doubt, that is one bit of information that’s been carried down through the years. From what I understand, the hatred is so strong, that some present day Jamaicans of African descent still hate some East Indians who are not even into gardening.

While I was trying to process that bit of disturbing information, something else came to my attention as well. I heard some one say that there are some Orientals who also hate people of East Indian descent.

In fact, I heard of a discussion in which one man of Oriental descent said to another that if he had a choice of having his life saved by a person of East Indian descent and dying, he would rather die.

That was when I thought enough was enough. Since the person who was telling me that some Oriental people who supposedly hate people of East Indian descent did not know why they, the Orientals, hate the East Indians, I decided to find out why. But since this is information I would not find in any history book, I decided to ask some one out there via the internet.

So if anyone reading this happens to know why some people from Asia hate some East Indians, this enquiring mind would like to know.

The same reason people want to know why they are liked is the same reason some may want to know why some people of their own race are hated. That’s not asking too much, is it?
