'Evolution Sunday' To Be Celebrated In Hundreds Of Churches
"Evolution Sunday" has drawn participation from a plethora of churches, including Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Unitarian, and United Church of Christ.
It goes without saying that these aren't fundamentalist churches that equate Darwin with the Antichrist. Jerry Falwell will hold a rave in his church before he participates in "Evolution Sunday".
Fortunately not all places of worship are at war with science and common sense, some congregations realize that the theory of evolution is compatible with faith in a deity.
I applaud the churches that will be participating in this singular event on Sunday, hopefully this will start a trend.
How about a "Human Rights Sunday", where houses of worship celebrate human sexual diversity and thereby prove that a belief in human rights is not incompatible with the Bible?
Or a "Pro Choice Sunday", where Catholic parishes celebrate women's privacy rights?
A "SpongeBob SquarePants Sunday" where tabernacles honor cartoon heroes and declare that they are not the emissaries of Satan?
There is no reason why churches should be at war with popular culture, science and theology can co-exist. Who knows, maybe even this freethinker will celebrate "Evolution Sunday" at an enlightened sanctuary this Sunday.
