Golden Throated Orators On Parade

Ken Hughes
The 2008 presidential primaries are perhaps the most entertaining in years. The public hasn´t seen this degree of comedy since Jimmy Carter ran for his second bit at the apple. It´ll be interesting to see how the DNC turns a decade of failure into success. It can happen and has a very good chance of happening for the most part the public has short memories. Only the Media has a shorter memory.

Every four years the voters are entertained with either new or repackaged promises by the candidates from both Democrat and Republican parties.

They promise things that will happen far in the future long after they´ve left office should one of them become president, even if they serve two terms their ambitions surpass their ability to perform. Their promises of grandiose proportion such as programs meant to improve the American standard of living ring hollow considering it takes the approval 535 congress men and women to agree before any of these miracles come to pass. Usually the candidate´s promises are as empty as the records they run on.

In their first term the Clintons promised Universal Health Care, it didn´t happen. George Bush promised Social Security reform, he got side tracked with a two front war. History tells us more times than not the promises that make men president rarely if ever come to pass. Franklin Roosevelt promised to end the great depression in mere months it took ten years and a war. Presidential candidates never seem to learn just because someone´s listing doesn´t mean they agree. Those magnanimous promises made on the campaign trail usually go by the wayside when the costs in personal freedom and financing become a factor, and there are 535 egos to be stroked and soothed. [Hell has no fury like a congress person´s ego.]

Presidential candidates are quick to separate themselves from the very thing that keeps our nation afloat, market economies, free enterprise, and businesses big and small. Politicians tend to treat commerce as though it were a cancer on society. In reality the exchange of goods and services for profit are what keeps the world´s wheels turning and on course in a manor of speaking. Every form of government conceivable has been tried at onetime or another and success always comes back to the individuals performances and free market economies. Man was never meant to be shackled by a the restrictions of government interference..

Governments should be there to maintain roads, deliver the mail and provide the nations security anything beyond that should have public approval. Politicians should not be free to mandate our every thought and action. Politicians get elected by making promises, promises that can´t be kept. This is because the public encourages such campaigning.

Monarchies either brutal of benevolent and totalitarian governments always give way to democracies in one form or another. It´s mans nature to be captain of his own ship. Most men would rather go hungry than be held captive by their government. Take a mans fish and he goes hungry for a day, take away his fishing pole and he starves! Many of our presidential candidates either unknowingly or deliberately are proposing taking away the publics fishing poles by virtue of excessive governmental regulations. Cutting a fishing pole in half and giving half to an underachiever doesn´t do much for them or the fishermen it only benefits the fish.

In my 77 years I´ve had the privilege of visiting five of the seven continents, I´ve been to twenty-seven countries I´ve experienced being an expatriate living in foreign countries. I think I´ve seen every form of mans inhumanity to man possible. I´ve also experienced the more enjoyable side of life in these countries. There´s always some good with the bad if we look for it. When I hear people from other countries and many of our own citizens besmirching America without looking in the mirror it bothers me. There´s no country on this earth with more freedom to express feelings than America There´s no country on this earth that has more and suffers less than America. Living the America dream is the envy of many of the world discontented. America is a great nation because it allows the individual freedom of expression both physical and intellectual. We must never allow that to change. When a politician says they want to change America they better be able to explain them-selves

Any politician who comes before the voters and says he / she is going to change America is displaying an arrogance that isn´t to be trusted. America can improve only [with] the consent of its citizens. No future president has a right without the consent of the people to mess with "We the People" and our comfort zone with out our consent beyond the voting booth. It is wise not to be swayed by gold throated oratory.

Before anyone trades the farm for a trip down the yellow brick road to Wonderland. It´s worth a look back down the road of past broken political promises the road to the Oval Office is lined with potholes and road-kill.
