Estes Park, CO: A View From Above and Long Ago
Fourteen thousand foot peaks; sprawling acres of prairie and meadow. Rivers, lakes, and golf courses. Sounds huge, doesn't it? Don't let the description fool you. Estes Park is about the friendliest, most intimate location in the Front Range. Thousands of years ago, ancestors of today´s American Indians hunted big game animals above tree line in what is now Rocky Mountain National Park. Understanding that the landscape was a hunter's paradise, Joel Estes visited the valley in 1859.  Estes planned on settling a cattle ranch there, and so he and his wife Patsy moved the family into two log cabins. Since then, the area has continued to grow. The town served as construction headquarters for the Colorado-Big Thompson Reclamation Project, a huge undertaking which continues to transport irrigation water from the western side of the Continental Divide to the eastern

plains.  The area has weathered two large, lethal floods: the Big Thompson flood of 1976, and the Lawn Lake flood of 1982. Cleanup efforts from the Lawn Lake Flood spurred a period of urban renewal and earned the town the nickname "Gutsiest Little Town in Colorado."
