Compulsory Charity is De-humanizing!: In 300 Words or Less

A female colleague of mine, who I will call Mary, has recently gone through some tough times. Last year her husband of 30 years passed away suddenly due complications from surgury. A few weeks ago, her young son had a massive systemic reaction to medication. The prognosis seems to be that he will not live. Mary has not given up hope, and remains by his side as his vital signs fluctuate and he goes in and out of consciousness. While she waits, the expenses associated with his care are mounting, and Mary is unable to work under the circumstances.

This week another colleague sent out a call to help Mary with the expenses, and I had the great pleasure of making a cash donation. When I delivered the money, I felt thankful to have a healthy family, fortunate to have money to give, and sympathy for the suffering of Mary's family. I also had a feeling of pride that I had taken the initiative to give a gift I know will be appreciated. I know when Mary receives our donation she will be deeply touched by our sympathy and generosity. I also know that when her tragedy is over, Mary will return to work as a productive contributor to our company. It was a very uplifting experience for me.

I could not help thinking of how this experience contrasts with the socialistic compulsory charity practiced by our government. The worker feels resentment that part of his wages are extorted to subsidize the unproductive; there is no reciprocal gratitude from the anonymous recipients; there is little expectation these recipients will ever become productive; and the charity is generally perceived as an entitlement. Feelings of Sympathy, Giving, Receiving and Gratitude are key to our shared humanity. Compulsory charity is dehumanizing for everyone.
