Why Not Like Mondays?

Judy Ramsook
There are some aspects about this life that many of us do not care much for. These are things that do not have to be complicated in nature, for one of those dislikes could be for a certain day of the week.

As some of you may have realised by now I happen to be a great fan of music, so while looking through my collection recently I came across songs that indicate a certain dislike for a particular day; Monday.

The Carpenters, for example had a hit single titled Rainy Days and Mondays, later on I became familiar with another song by an Irish band that called themselves The Boomtown Rats.

Their hit was simply titled, I Don’t Like Mondays. Furthermore, there is a line in the Boomtown Rats hit that reads like this: I wanna shoot the whole day down. Pretty strong sentiment there, isn’t it?

A dislike for that day does not get any clearer than that. To add to sharing a dislike for this particular day was also a song by The Bangles titled Manic Monday as they also expressed how the character in the song felt about that day.

Now I am sure there are other songs that express a certain hate for Monday, but the ones I have mentioned are the ones I am more familiar with.

To persons who do not have a dislike for this day, those songs are just that, then one may stop and seriously wonder why do people hate Mondays?

Is it because they are enjoying their weekend too much to want to see it come to an end, because once that happens, here returns one’s weekly dose of reality with Monday, the start of another work week at the office.

Or is it because one is so intoxicated after a Sunday evening of partying it up that with the coming of Monday also means he or she would have to sober up so he can at least make it to the office on time?

Of course this leads one to wonder, if you know you have to get up early for work Monday morning, why bother to booze it up or become so intoxicated in the first place the night before such a day?

Let’s say you were stuck in some parallel dimension in which there was no Monday. Would that make some individuals who share a certain aversion for this day any happier, or would they suddenly have something new not to like, such as Tuesday?

On a personal note, I see Monday as just one of those things we all have to live with, whether we like it or not it’s going to be there Sunday after Sunday after Sunday. Complaining or singing hit singles about one’s dislike for it is not going to make it suddenly disappear.
