NordicTrack Elliptical Trainer Review

Fred Waters
NordicTrack elliptical trainers offers some of the best value for crosstraining machines. They are built by Icon Fitness, which is the largest fitness equipment manufacturer in the world. They are not just #1 - they are #1 by a hefty margin. What this means to the consumer is they often are getting more for their money. It is a matter of economy of scale.

Last summer I visited the Icon corporate headquarters, out in Logan, UT. I went there with a bit of an attitude. You see Icon also builds ProForm, Weslo, Image, Epic and Reebok ellipticals and treadmills. In the past, I was getting numerous complaints about the company´s customer service. I believe the quality of service is an important factor when making a buying decision.

I met with the Director of Customer Service, and he agreed that there had been a problem in the past; however, they were committing considerable resources and money to rectify the problem. He mentioned an investment of $2 million to improve their customer response.

Apparently, it has made a difference. The number of negative reviews based on inadequate customer service has dropped significantly. In fact, I have only received several complaints, and considering the size of the company that is commendable.

But what about the quality of the elliptical trainers? The fact is NordicTrack elliptical trainers are not the best money can buy. That is reserved for brands like Precor or Life Fitness. Of course, those ellipticals are commercial grade for the home, and they start at over $3,000.

However, within the $700 - $1,300 price range, they offer some of the best value available for an elliptical machine. There are two reasons NordicTrack elliptical trainers are a good buy.

  • First, they build decent machines. These are not commercial grade, but you are not paying commercial prices.

  • Second, many of their models have some very innovative features.

  • For example, they have several models that offer the ability to adjust the incline of your elliptical motion. It is like adjusting the incline of a treadmill. The advantage is you increase your cardio workout, and exercise different muscles in your lower body.

In addition, NordicTrack has some unique and challenging workout programs. Several of their models offer the patented iFit technology, which are programs that control the resistance of your machine and are designed by certified personal trainers. The programs also include audio coaching that further motivates and optimizes your workout.

As mentioned, NordicTrack ellipticals offers some of the best value in their price range. However, it is important to realize many of their models fall under the budget category. These machines have some limitations. For example, if you are excessively overweight or plan to do strenuous workouts, you need a higher-end machine. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a good value for moderate exercising, NordicTrack is a decent option.
