Lunatics Run Alaska Marathon For Leukemia Cure

Mike Catherall
Some say they are crazy. Others say they are masochists. Most, however, do agree, that those who subject themselves to grueling, agonizing torture for the sake of finding a cure for a life-threatening disease merit at least a raised eyebrow or two worth of attention.

And that is exactly what these attention-hungry madmen and women hope to achieve when they run the midnight marathon in Alaska.

Through overgrown trails, past bear and moose, and under an unrelenting hot sun that never sets or ceases, hundreds of those in the Team in Training program will brave the elements, swollen feet, broken blisters and pain to raise $5500 each for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.

The leukemias are the most common cancers in the young, and account for slightly more than one-quarter of all malignancies in Canadian children and teenagers. In the United States 29000 people a year, including over 2000 children are diagnosed with the disease.

With enough research and funding, it is possible to find a cure.

For this reason, Team In Training has organized a team to run for a cure. And will be running a long, long way.

On June 17th, TNT will be running 42 km in the Alaska Marathon during the midnight sun.

As a part of this team, I have personal goals to raise over $5500 and run the marathon in under 4.25 hours.

If you would like to support a runner like me in their quest to raise $5500 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, please refer to this website. Donations are tax-deductible.

The most esteemed runner in the Team in Training program would arguably be 1/2 marathon dynamo Maria Hruschak. She is also raising funds for this cause at her personal website.
