Run, Huckabee, Run!
The name alone brings a smile: it´s fun to say. President Huckabee evokes sardonic laughter among Republicans. They do not know the joke´s on them. Again.
Mike Huckabee is not giving up. And good for him. When a hotly contested run for office turns into a love-fest, the American people know what´s up. Being the butt of innumerable barbershop and coffee shop banter for centuries, politicians are just not that slick. The jockeying for position until pressured, turns into jockeying for the favorite´s favor in the political game King of the Hill. This is an old game in this relatively young country, so it is at least entertaining to see a new kid on the block.
Mike Huckabee is just that: a scrappy opponent who just will not cave in to the Republican machinations. Here stands a Republican in sheep´s clothing, hanging on to the ideal that the people still have a say. Unusual for a Republican to even give the American public´s thoughts a second thought, and people are starting to take notice. He is not giving up and having fun doing it. How can anyone be mad at that? Huckabee is a refreshing change to business as usual in Washington. Once again, the American people recognize that and say, We´ve Had Enough.
McCain and Clinton have become tired and laughable in their quests for the White House. McCain struggles to keep up the same façade and, though leading in the Republican primaries, still exudes the old Republican way of life. Clinton appears battered and weary, and it looks like the it is taking everything she has to hold her temper in check. This kinder, gentler Hillary is a difficult departure from her usual brash and offensive portrait.
The new blood runs fast and deep into the pulse of the American community. Too long have individual voices been interrupted and subsequently silenced by our increasingly secretive government. Too long have we sacrificed our young and our brave, exchanging American blood and weapons for foreign oil. Too long have we exploited our resources then sought other remedies halfway around the world, leaving our own to suffer through joblessness and bankruptcy. Too long have we trained our young instead of providing the education needed to compete effectively in the world and hold our own.
McCain and Clinton are so bogged down in the politics of politicking they do not see the writing on the wall. They do not really hear the American people. They are selling themselves to the money backing them; and while they do, Obama and Huckabee are listening to the people. For the first time in many of our lifetimes, Americans feel they may actually have a say, and a choice. We have two people running for President of the United States who will not be oppressed by what has become the norm of political play.
This is what our forefathers were talking about. This is what those before us sacrificed their lives for. No matter what party one chooses to support, no one can say this election is business as usual. No matter who wins the nominations and eventually the election, the political process will never be the same.
That is a good thing.
