James Frey is a Liar...But What is The Smoking Gun
The strange thing is that Frey's life was tough already, so why did he feel the need to embellish? In the U.S. that is what sells. It does not matter if it is true, but whether someone will believe it. For some reason politics comes to mind.
I hope that Frey learns something from this experience and does not use it as a reason to fall off the wagon. Even if the book was embellished some people were helped. That should not be taken away from him. Maybe this is just one more piece to his full recovery. It is sad that it had to be played out in public.
That leads me to wonder what the motive of The Smoking Gun was. Why did they choose his book versus the others that Oprah has used? What makes his book worthy of scrutiny while others remain unchallenged? I think it was a completely monetary thing. They followed the money and wanted to destroy him. Maybe they found out that he was not as "bad" as he claimed, but in reality his story did not harm anyone. I think the fallout has done more damage than the book.
Maybe someone should unmask The skeletons in the closet of the writers at The Smoking Gun. Who cares if it is fact or fiction. How Frey perceived it can be far different than the reality, which is normal for addicts, and people in general. My issue with TSG is that it seems they were out to destroy him and that is not deserved. He is a liar not a murderer. Did they do all this for Tookie Williams? Nope, not a word.
I think they choose who they want to destroy. How sad because that will come back to bite them.
Having said that, Frey is a liar and should have told his publishers the truth. He has placed them in a weird situation. His story was tragic already, so he did not need to embellish. Just the fact that he has been sober for 12 years is impressive. He deserves a pat on the back for that. Some have taken issue with the idea that he did not like the twelve step programs. So What? It is better that he knew that instead of wasting time on something that he did not believe helped him.
Hopefully, Frey can just go on with his life and learn from this. He needs to take the high road and just learn that without truth you have no character. This is a tough lesson to learn in the public eye, but if he will do it for himself then the public will forgive him.
