Some Things We Take For Granted

Judy Ramsook
There are certain conveniences, over a period of time people become accustomed to. Especially if such conveniences have been consistently available. Some of these things become so common place, that after a while some persons forget they are there.

Not all of these conveniences will be explored here, for that would require a thousand page manuscript or more, but there are the few we use more frequently than others.

Jumping out of bed in the morning- painfree. Maybe not all of us might literally jump out of bed in the morning, but which ever way you do happen to get off that bed, be thankful if you can do this as easily as it was meant to be. It is a luxury.

Running water. Some people in countries that are less developed than the one you might be in might not have this luxury.

Take a simple thing such as turning on a faucet and voila! You have clean water. Others who are less fortunate might have to get up, get a pail and head down to the nearest river or stream for this precious liquid we cannot live without.

Telephone service. It is just one of the many ways we communicate and although it is a great necessity, there is a device you can use in an effort not to answer it when it rings.

That something? Caller ID service. If you were to suddenly lose telephone service for say a day due to weather related conitions or a computer malfunction, you might race to answer it next time you hear it ringing, telemarketer at the other end or not.

Owning a car or vehicle. Some people may drive this for days on end without thinking of giving it a much needed wash, or an oil change for that matter, but the moment it breaks down you may find yourself hoofing it to the nearest bus stop. That is if you are not fortunate enough to have some one take you where you need to go.

Going to bed at night and falling asleep in less than fifteen minutes as opposed to spending a good portion of the night staring at the ceiling.

There are some people who might have problems with sleep, so be thankful too if you can manage to sleep without the aid of a sleeping pill.

Coming home at the end of the day to find that your house and home is very much in tact. With the recent destructive forces of hurricane Katrina still fresh in the minds of many who lost their homes to Category 3 winds and rain, be grateful that you still have yours. Those hurricane victims who lost their homes wish they still had theirs too.

With so many things taking place in most of our lives, it is not everyday some one can take the time to give thanks to himself, his or her ancestors, his job, or country for the simple necessities that help make one's life easier, but if you can it’s not asking too much. Is it?
