George W. Bush: I Don't Know Abramoff (Yeah, Right!)
"We do not torture" President George W. Bush declared, in the final stop of his Latin American tour last November.
Dubya's "We don't torture" invokes the same cynicism as Tricky Dick's "I am not a crook."
George W. Bush has made another incredibly cynical statement declaring, "I don't know him", referring to convicted super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
"I had my picture taken with him, evidently," Bush said at a White House news conference. "I've had my picture taken with a lot of people. Having my picture taken with someone doesn't mean that I'm a friend with them or know them very well."
President Bush rejected requests by the media to release photos that show him gladhanding Jack Abramoff.
A picture may speaks a thousand words, but Bush's refusal to release the incriminating photographs speaks a million words. It's a symbol of the administration's refusal to come clean with the many scandals swirling around the White House.
"I don't know him", is an outright lie. Bush may not have a personal relationship with Abramoff, but he was well aware of who Abramoff was and what he represented, when he was photographed with him.
By shaking Abramoff's hand, Bush was giving the convicted lobbyist the presidential seal of approval.
"Having my picture taken with someone doesn't mean that I'm a friend..." rings hollow. President Bush would never allow himself to be photographed with Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez, or any other leader whose political ideology he vehemently disagrees with.
Bush was OK with shaking hands with Abramoff because he is comfortable with the dirty politics epitomized by Jack Abramoff.
It has been proven that indeed the United States does torture, the Bush administration washes its hands, and outsources the torture of suspected terrorists.
It will soon be manifest that the Bush administration was well acquainted with Jack Abramoff.
