Marketing Ten Yards – or Yes, there is life after 10 mph
I happened to see a promo for 10 mph by accident on Stumble Upon and flagged the movie as a keeper but still missed it on the big screen. Indie films don´t enjoy a long run time at the box office. However, that Stumble Upon connect got a hit from one of the show´s stars and I checked back in to find a surprise. http://www.10mph.com/the-film/index.html
Being first at anything is usually good for a jump start. This first is an impressive bold move. Hunter Weeks and Josh Caldwell are giving away their first movie (that works on so many levels). According to them, 10 mph is officially the first full-length feature film available on You Tube. And that means the whole thing, no commercials, no charge.
In case you (like me) missed the highly acclaimed indie film 10 mph, and let´s face it, most indie films get stuck in that not-big-enough-to-dot-the-mainstream-radar vacuum; 10 mph is a delightful, off the wall, cross country trek from Seattle to Boston on a Segway (and a dime).
Chucking the security of corporate life and a steady paycheck would understandably make a relative or parent of said individual queasy. Segway execs mirrored that discomfort, playing it cool while the film and the filmmakers were in the baby step phase and, as a result, sweating and fretting a significant number of those mph's.
Who in their right mind would travel at 10 mph across the USA on a Segway? And that isn´t meant to be a slam. It is easier than you think to get bucked off of one of those things if you don´t pay attention. And they need ongoing battery reloads. Watch their bloopers, also on You Tube.
Indeed, with much retrospective angst and a highly discomforting level of plastic abuse, the guys endured and results came. In the end, Segway execs warmed up to forking over some product.
With all that under their belt, the guys are demonstrating a new level of gorilla marketing prowess. Hunter Weeks and Josh Caldwell earned their stripes. Judging from the current crop of sponsors on board for the next film, they´re up for a whole new challenge. They still have to raise the funds but it looks promising.

The new product: Ten yards – A documentary about fantasy football. That just sounds hilarious.
