Motivating Kids to Read
Its amazing to note that Reading makes a good listener.
As a child prattles, he is not merely speaking gibberish, but expressing from what you have spoken. Hence do not ever ignore a child´s sweet nothings. Make eye-contact and encourage every word. Reading to a child is the best way to bond. It is advisable to start reading at the time of conception itself. More essentially, reading as a regime should be enjoyable to you also. If you have never been an avid reader, this is the right time. Fathers- to- be can effectively partake in reading sessions.
While you read, many concepts get clearer. There are wonderful picture and cartoon character books available in the market for initial start-ups. Invest in a good collection, arrange them orderly in a special book shelf for kids. The concept of words is vital, e.g. Good, Nice, Morning, Evening etc. You get such word pictorial books or better still take a paint brush and draw it on a white paper.
Colour fun and reading - Together. Draw and read ´Sun´, colour and read ´yellow´, draw and read ´clouds´, colour and read ´white´ describe as ´fluffy clouds´. Once this is done, on a casual drive-out, show them fluffy clouds, bright sun and big blue sky. And lo! You will beget an admiring big eyed smile. Your 6 month old child is learning about nature!
Studies reveal that bed time reading is very effective. Children are extremely airy fairy and love magic and elves. Make it a routine to end the day with a prayer, word picture, and an elaborate story reading. Next day encourage the child to form sentences and show them pictures and words. Take mumbles and nods for granted as signs of grasping.
Punctuations, and commas and exclamations are highly essential. There is a lot of drama in onomatopoeia. If you have a nanny at home, request her to read a book during the day. Grandparents are good readers. Reward all their achievements by buying books. Various books are available just for children as per the age. Books are unique in craft work, origami, mythology, animation and regular alphabets and numbers too.
Our duty is to expose the child to reading, and any coercive methods of forced learning during reading activities will repel a child in future developments. If bed time stories are difficult or you are too tired to read, then arrange for weekly or daily ready sessions. Venue can be exciting like beach picnics, your courtyard or the regular high-chair eating session.
