Lynchburg Shouldn't Name A Highway After Jerry Falwell
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Steve Newman, R-Lynchburg, now goes to the House of Delegates and, if approved there, to the governor. Newman said he felt confident the bill "is on a glide path" toward final approval."

What comes to mind when you think of Lynchburg, TN? Jack Daniels! What comes to mind when you think of Lynchburg, VA? Jerry Falwell! Who knows what has wreaked more havoc, the controversial televangelist or Jack Daniels whisky?
Jerry Falwell was a divisive figure in American culture; he ostracized gays, demonized feminists, blasted liberals and condemned everyone to hell who didn't share his religious beliefs.
Even in Lynchburg Falwell was far from being a universally beloved figure. The quickest way to start a fight in any public venue is by bringing up Jerry Falwell.
In Lynchburg there are many faithful sheep who worship at the altar of Jerry Falwell, but there are also many people who have been hurt by the intolerant blather that emanated from the pulpit of Jerry Falwell's Thomas Road Baptist Church.
Most citizens of Lynchburg don't approve of the bigotry and intolerance of Jerry Falwell. Now that Falwell is dead we should do our best to forget him -- we certainly shouldn't elevate him to a position of honor and remembrance.
It would be an outrage if a highway is named after such an intolerant and indecent man. I urge the fine people of Lynchburg to get in touch with their delegates and demand that they don't approve this godforsaken bill.
