How to Buy a Good Laptop
Let´s look at some of the factors one should consider when buying a laptop.
Processor: First thing you need to look forward in a laptop is the CPU which is considered to be the heart of the computer. The latest laptop CPUs has Intel´s Core 2 Duo and Core Duo processors which go better than the old single-core Intel processors such as Pentium. Another option available in a dual-core processor is the AMD Athlon Turion 64 X2 which is also an excellent performer.
System memory: Another important element in the laptop is the RAM. It is advised to go for minimum 1GB of RAM which is required to run the new PC applications faster. Remember you can always upgrade your laptops with additional memory if required.
Graphics memory: Another feature that needs to be considered is the Graphics Memory. Ideally it is recommended to go for 128MB dedicated video RAM. Further make sure that the graphics memory is used only for graphics use and not shared by the main memory. If you are a gamer and plan to play games on the laptop, then the advanced 3D graphics chips with dedicated graphics memory of 256MB to 512MB is the right choice for you.
Screen: If you had a look at the laptop screen recently you will notice that they have become bigger with widescreen so you can edit your spreadsheets or rather watch movies more comfortably.
If you plan to buy a laptop for home purpose then go for the one that has 17-inch wide screen. In case you have more of traveling and you are concerned with the portability, then you go for 12.1 or 13.3 inches screen.
Battery: The laptop's battery is one of the most critical factors that have to be considered when buying a laptop. Select a laptop that has a minimum battery life of 3 hours running on a Core 2 Duo or Core Duo processor.
Keyboard and Pointing Device: keyboard and pointing devices also play a major role when buying a laptop. Many individuals have big fingers, so they need a notebook with a large keypad.
Hard drive: The hard drive is another essential factor when planning to buy a notebook. If you have simple office work, then you can go for regular 80 GB hard drive and in case you have more of graphic work, then you need a hard drive of 160-250GB. These days most of the notebooks come with a hard drive of 160 GB. You can also go for SATA hard drives if money is not a concern for you.
Weight: Buy a laptop with a weight that can be carried easily. Weight of the laptop is not exclusively concerned with the notebook but it also includes the weight of AC adapter, any external modules, and their cables. If you are a frequent traveler then the actual weight of the notebook should not exceed 2.2 kg.
Communications: Check for at least two USB 2.0 ports if you have a lot of video editing. You can also select a notebook with FireWire (IEEE 1394) port for video editing. Along with the USB ports, also check for good network capabilities with built in Ethernet, wireless connection and Bluetooth. All these network ports are essential for downloading and transferring data from various internal and external sources. Some of the notebooks are also equipped with CompactFlash, Secure Digital and MultiMediaCard, if you are concerned more about digital photography.
