George Bush Was At His Best
The president was very clear he expects to be a strong leader to his last day in office. He also made it clear he wouldn´t tolerate congress taking advantage of his time left as president to shirk their responsibilities to the country. Many of his supporters felt George Bush left congress to their own devices far to long. They felt he needed to stand up and challenge congress when they were remiss in their duties to the public. They became like a group of kindergartners playing in a sand box with only one pail and scoop.
In his address the president made it clear he intends to speak softly and his big stick will be the veto pen, [to paraphrase Teddy Roosevelt.] The nice thing about being a lame duck he can crap on anyone he likes with impunity at this point they can´t fire or impeach him.
I can´t recall a State of the Union address when both parties gave standing ovations like this one. Democrats were on their feet more than any of the president´s previous addresses. I´m sure it was because it was an honest assessment of his intentions with out a lot of political hypocrisy. There were no grandiose promises of the unobtainable meant to impress the public. The few things he suggested needing funding were reasonable and obtainable. He didn´t back down on making the tax cuts permanent, He didn´t back down on his intent to block unnecessary earmark spending slipped into budgets on the sly without congressional votes.
The president was emphatic is his support for the troops, veterans and their families. Given the mood of the nation this is something congress would be hard-pressed to ignore. The president stood fast on his commitment to assist those nations who are struggling to establish a form of democracy. America has a tradition of keeping its promises to underprivileged nations from one president to the next. Regardless of campaign rhetoric I doubt the next president will be quick to change American policy.
President Bush was confident his remarks they were well delivered without hesitation. His demeanor was that of a man doing another regular days work as though it was nothing special. He had a message to deliver and that was what he delivered with very little personal aggrandizement.
There was little in the presidents remarks Democrats could argue with. He spent most of his time challenging congress to stand up to the plate and start acting responsible in a bipartisan way and stop the in-house bickering. He reminded them of the constitution and what it means to the way they perform their sworn duties to the nation.
Bravo George Bush way to go. What a magnificent final report to the nation.
