How to Choose the Right Size Architectural Fiberglass Column for Your Project by Kyle Boatwright
There are many variables to consider when choosing the right sized fiberglass column.
First, there are many styles to choose from when trying to decide what fiberglass column to use on your project. There are fluted and plain fiberglass columns, there are tapered and non-tapered fiberglass columns, and there are tapered and non-tapered fiberglass columns. There are also plain and decorative capitals that are installed with the columns. To determine which column and capital to use depends on the style of the project that you are constructing. For example you would not typically put a round non-tapered fiberglass column on a craftsmen style house. This is typically designed for a square tapered fiberglass column.
Second, after determining what type of project that is being constructed, it is important to determine the "right sized column" for the application. It is important to not choose a fiberglass column that is too small. This is a typical mistake that people make when buying their fiberglass architectural columns. By following this chart you can easily determine what the correct column size with certain capitals that are available.
OrderDivisorCalculation (in inches)"Right size" Column
Tuscan 7 96/7 = 13.7 14" x 8´
Doric 8 96/8 = 12.0 12" x 8´
Ionic 9 96/9 = 10.7 10" or 12" x 8´
Corinthian 10 96/10 = 9.6 10" x 8´
Composite 10 96/10 = 9.6 10" x 8´
Lastly, despite knowing what is architecturally correct and what is the "right size" column, these factors may still not fit the needs of a particular client. Sometimes choosing the "right size" column may not fit into the budget and a smaller size may be needed. The right size column may be too large for the porch or balcony. Then there´s personal preference of the client. This constraint may also have to be met as well and ultimately is the deciding factor!
