The Five Benefits of Architectural Fiberglass Columns versus Wood Columns By Kyle Boatwright
Benefit 1: Fiberglass Columns are offered with a limited lifetime warranty. Wood columns, particularly pine wood, are normally offered with a one year warranty. In some cases you can purchase a redwood column and a 10 year warranty may be offered. This, however, is still far less than a lifetime warranty
Benefit 2: Fiberglass columns are stronger than wood columns. The 12" diameter fiberglass column load capacity is 18,000 lbs. A wood column load capacity is 12,000 lbs. Though both load capacities of the fiberglass and wood columns are big numbers, it is comforting to know that the fiberglass column is approximately 50% stronger!
Benefit 3: Fiberglass columns are manufactured with non-corrosive materials that will not rot and are impervious to insects such as termites. Wood columns can rot and have great vulnerability to termites.
Benefit 4: Lower maintenance is a great benefit to fiberglass columns. Wood columns typically have to be painted more over a period of time. Ventilation is required for exterior wood columns. Should the wood columns not be properly vented can greatly reduce the columnīs life.
Benefit 5: Installation of a fiberglass column is easier as the capital and base are fixed around the column and the column is cut to the overall height of the opening. For the wood column installation the capital rests on top of the shaft and the base sets underneath the shaft. The fiberglass column installation saves time and money.
