Sometimes It's The Journalist Who Suffers

Judy Ramsook
Everyone wants to leave his or her mark in the world. It’s the main reason most people procreate, strive to win awards in their fields of expertise or take advantage of an opportunity others do not.

Then there are some individuals who will risk whatever it takes to achieve whatever it is they have set out to acquire.

Take the recent disappearance/abduction of journalist, Jill Carroll for example. Not only did she volunteer to go to Iraq in search of the story that might have one day deemed her worthy of the Pulitzer prize, but she did so probably knowing the risks involved.

She must have been aware that, as a seeker of the truth, she would have been met with some strong opposition from certain rebels who might not have wanted the world to learn otherwise. Knowing this and also her life could have been at stake, the twenty eight year old proceeded as planned.

Why capture a journalist? Some might say, and the reasons are simple. Journalists and reporters seek the truth and spread the word about their findings to the world.

It is because of these very reasons that some individuals who are engaged in activities they might not take too kindly to when it comes to having people the world over learn of, is when some form of action to suppress the truth is taken.

In times of war, it is sometimes the journalists who suffer as a result. They are seeking the truth while some one else who is against such revelations might take other actions.

Usually this comes in the form of the kidnapping of a journalist. Worse yet, sometimes the life of that journalist is taken.

When that happens, the journalist who is taken has already made his or her mark in the world. For he or she sacrificed him or herself for a cause. That cause of finding the truth so others can learn of what has been taking place.

I hope like many of you reading this also hope that Jill Carroll comes out of her plight alive and well. If she does not, at least we know that she did what she did all in the name of seeking out the truth, and for that, she will not be forgotten.
