I support my local police, and I am very grateful for their heroism and dedication to making my community safe.
But a cop's middle class salary allows him to live in the suburbs, away from the truly destitute homeless people downtown. A police officer doesn't have to worry about lack of medical or dental care.
The Gospels teach us to minister to social outcasts like prisoners and the homeless. Rev. Caywood should have donated the sizeable chunk of money to a homeless shelter or a rescue mission.
The average cop will probably use his $1,000 check to buy a high def TV or a top of the line computer. Why not give the money to desperate souls who need it to buy food, clothing and shelter?
Rev. Caywood should show his support for the Odessa police by slapping a bumper sticker on his car that reads, "I support my local police dept.", but he should raise funds to help those who are really in need.
