How to Install Decorative Interior or Exterior Architectural Fiberglass Columns by Kyle Boatwright
Both interior and exterior fiberglass columns are installed the same way. However, there may be a few variables that differ for the both applications that are important to be aware of when installing each.
In an exterior load bearing application, you may be able to jack-up and support your header which will enable you to easily slide the architectural fiberglass column into place. This allows you some variance when you are cutting your column. For the interior fiberglass column installation, you typically will not be able to lift the ceiling. This means you need to make sure your measurements are exact to give a close tight finish
When using a standard Tuscan capital and base for round or square fiberglass columns the capital and base are cosmetic and slide over the column. This covers the "L" brackets that are attached to the sides of the columns and prevents lateral movement.
Unlike the Tuscan capital installation, using a decorative capital such as the Roman Corinthian or Greek Ionic, this installation procedure is slightly different. The capitals for the fiberglass columns are load-bearing. The column, in order to be architecturally correct, must be cut at the neck mold or astragal to allow the capital to set directly on top of the column. Next, toe-nail screw into the top of the column and up into the bottom of the capital attaching the capital to the column. Lastly, fill the screw holes with a sandable caulk and prime and paint the columns with high quality latex or oil base
